Character Descriptions
TONY, Age: early - mid 30's in opening scene (aka scene 1)
Age: early - mid 40's in scenes 2 until end of play
Widower. Secretive. Former army doctor, currently bar owner.
Tony is a former Army Doctor, but is now in hiding since it was
found that he was experimenting on the bodies of dead soldiers in
an attempt to bring back his deceased wife. Under a fake name, he
runs a bar, and lives with his daughter, Samantha. Tony also has a
secret he has been holding onto since his wife passed.
"YOUNG" SAMANTHA, Tony's daughter (age 9 only in first scene//pages1-6)
In the opening of the play Samantha is 9 years old. Animated and curious,
she loves to be with her father and wishes he could go trick-or-treating
with her.
SAMANTHA, Tony's daughter (age 19 in scene 2 until end)
After the accident, the present day Samantha, age 19, is spirited, rebellious,
verbal, strong. She is also angry at her father, and misses her Mom.
Samantha plans on running away with her boyfriend, Len.
SOLDIER/MONSTER (aka The Drifter)
Age: 19 - in opening scene (aka scene 1)
Age: 29 - in scenes 2 until end of play
In the opening scene, the young soldier is bright-eyed, friendly, talkative
and optimistic. After the helicopter accident, the young soldier (now Monster)
is stoic, quiet, and keeps to himself. He eyes have a determined look, and he
presents as unafraid of anyone/anything. He also cannot remember anything, and is
trying to figure out who he is. All his belongings are in a backpack as he searches
to find out where he belongs.
ROSA, owns the convenience store. Age 50-65
Her son was in the army, and went MIA. The army told Rosa that
her son died. But since his body was never returned, she still believes
he may be alive, and in fact, may be the Monster who comes to town.
HECTOR, Rosa's brother, works at convenience store. Age 50-60
Hector is a no-nonsense guy, do it by the book and follow the law.
The law is always right. He also believes Rosa's son is dead, and wishes
Rosa would move on.
LEN (Leonard), Samantha's boyfriend. Age 19/20
Charismatic, yet an outsider. Since he lives on "the other side of town",
feels like he always has to wear an emotional mask to appeal to the people
in Samantha's town. He has a quick fuse, and feels like he's always
looking over his shoulder.
BILLIE, Len’s friend. Age 19/20
Nice, yet unaware of social cues at times. Always trying to be helpful and
put a positive spin on even the worst of situations.
SHERIFF (Ray), Sheriff of the town. Age 45-70
Narcissistic Authoritarian. Xenophobic. White Male. Truly believes his way
is helping keep the town he polices safe and under control. (does not sing)
DEPUTY, works with Sheriff. Age 25-40
Hopeful. Realistic. Wants to help the community, but often finds his/her
beliefs in conflict with the Sheriff's. (does not sing)
NARRATOR, Female- keeps the story moving. Early 30's.
The Narrator is Samantha's deceased mother, Tony's deceased wife.
Angelic. Hopeful. The Narrator is always observing the situation, but
no one knows she's present (until the end).
AMY, Samantha's friend. Seldom speaks. Age 18/19
Quiet, almost invisible. Wants to speak, but often feels like she's told to
be silent, or ignored.
HOMELESS MAN, war veteran named Jackson. Age 50-60.
Disheveled. Quirky and likable. Smiles a lot and happy to be alive.
BOUNCER, works at bar for Tony. Age mid 20-30's.
NEWS REPORTER (opening Act Two), Age 20's-30's
CAMERAMAN, Age 20's-50's
